Mental Illness in Singapore - Quick facts



With 1 in 16 Singaporeans having experienced it at least once in their lives, major depressive disorder is the most common mental health condition in Singapore according to Homage, an health tech based in Singapore.

We define the depressive disorder as a the feeling depressed and experiencing other symptoms of depression daily, for at least two weeks.


Another study made by the National University of Singapore confirmed that about one in three youth in Singapore has reported internalising mental health symptoms such as sadness, anxiety and loneliness, a national study has found.


Those aged 14 to 16 had more serious symptoms.


The good news is that more Singaporeans keen to learn about mental health and seek help. A survey done by Chanel News Asia found that 66 per cent of respondents in Singapore were concerned about the stigma surrounding mental health. Although things are improving on the awareness front, misconceptions remain, the experts said.



Other statistics based on the Institute of Mental Health (IMH), 8.7% of the surveyed Singapore population met the criteria for clinical depression, while 9.4% met the criteria for anxiety.
